Weekly Symposia

Scheduled Events:

Upcoming Symposia

There are no events scheduled at this time. Please see our Calendar for other events.

Looking Ahead and Research Cross Talk Symposia will take place at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, and continue to 12:15 PM. Lunch will follow immediately after each symposium, which is intended to encourage informal discussion of the issues that were addressed. The two types of symposia will be presented on alternate weeks, and will include 2 - 3 participants. In all cases, the participants will meet a week before the presentation to discuss the structure and flow of the event.

We  video these events, and will edit the videos to 10 minute segments and post these edited videos on YouTube. These videos will be distinctively branded with the CASBS logo, and are intended not only to educate the public but also to strengthen awareness of CASBS and its mission.

Looking Ahead Symposia

These participants will consider the big issues in a field and will discuss what they consider to be the most promising approaches for addressing these issues. Some of the participants will be Fellows, some will be Stanford faculty, and some will be researchers from Silicon Valley. Each participant will be given 15 minutes to summarize what he or she thinks are the major impediments in the field being discussed and ways to cope with them. The participants will be given 10 minutes to discuss their presentations among themselves before the discussion is opened to the audience.

Research Cross Talk Symposia

These discussions seek points of cross-fertilization among different fields. Participants typically will be Fellows, but sometimes a particularly appropriate member of the Stanford faculty will be included. The participants will be drawn from fields that make at least some contact with each other. Each participant will post the URL to one relevant paper a week in advance. During the event itself, each participant will present his or her work for 10 minutes; the participants will then be encouraged to ask each other questions for 10 minutes; and then the audience will be invited to ask questions.
