May 17, 2008 - Class of 2007-08 Graduation
April 17-18, 2008 - CASBS Board of Directors Meeting
The Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University is now accepting applications for residential fellowships for the 2009-10 academic year.
Kenneth Prewitt, Carnegie Professor of Public Policy at Columbia
University, has been appointed to the board of trustees of the Center
for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS), effective
September 1, 2007.
Member of the public are invited to a lecture at the Center on Thursday, October
18th from 7-9 pm. The speaker is Jennifer Summit, Associate Professor
of English at Stanford, and Director of the Medieval Studies Program.
Jennifer will be addressing the subject of her forthcoming book,
Remaking Libraries in Reformation England.
Finding
a solution to the issue of health care reform is not easy, and reform proposals
abound. But before a solution can be
found, the FRESH-Thinking (Focused Research on Efficient, Secure Healthcare)
project based at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences
(CASBS) thinks its important to first identify the elements of a successful U.S.
health care policy and then find a policy proposal that best fits those needs.
Claude M. Steele, director of
the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS), has announced
that two new trustees have joined the Centers board of trustees, effective September 1, 2007.
In September, the
Stanford-based Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences
(CASBS) welcomed a larger number of Fellows in its 54th class.
Whether we know it or not, our lives are affected by visions. Most of
the major religions have been founded through them, wars and
revolutions have been fought because of them, and visual images,
auditory messages, or the sense of invisible presence enriches (and
often confuses) the lives of a surprisingly large number of ordinary
people.
On
Tuesday, June
5, 2007, Dr. Alejandro
Toledo, former president of Peru and a distinguished visitor at the Center for
Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, will present a seminar titled The War on Poverty in Latin America:
Profitable for Business and Good for

Effective with the class of 2008-09,
the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) will implement
a new fellow selection process, inviting scholars to apply for fellowships
instead of requesting nominations.
As part
of an effort to engage and involve the local community in the social and
behavioral sciences, the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences
(CASBS) at Stanford is hosting a public lecture and discussion series featuring
the work of scholars who are currently Fellows.

John Reed, Chairman of the Board at the Center for

the appointment of Robert McG. Lilley to the board.
September 18, 2006 - CENTER APPOINTS COLE AND MCCLELLAND
TO BOARD
Jonathan R. Cole and James L. (Jay) McClelland have
been appointed members of the Board of Trustees at the Center for
Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS), a 50-year-old
independent research institution located near Stanford University that
awards annual fellowships to advance knowledge about human behavior. [more]

DONATES JOURNALS TO HELP ARMENIAN
SCHOLARS
For decades the lower Maybeck offices of the Center housed
a large
collection of statistics journals and reference books. [more]
August 21, 2006 - The Center's fabulous chef Susan Beach
got a write up in the Missoulian. The reporter called her Curried
Zucchini Soup "a revelation" and further says:
"The soup has an appealing spiciness and an incredible depth of flavor,
a roasty richness that makes you keep wanting to eat more."

August 17, 2006 - ANNE PETERSEN TO BE DEPUTY
DIRECTOR AT
CASBS
Dr. Anne C. Petersen will assume the role of Deputy
Director
at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) at
Stanford, effective September 6, 2006.
May 31, 2006 - BLUE SHIELD FOUNDATION
HELPS FUND HEALTH CARE REFORM PROJECT AT CASBS
The Blue Shield of California Foundation has
announced that
it is making a $300,000 donation to the Center for Advanced Study in
the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS), based at Stanford, to help fund a
3-year investigation into creating an effective and equitable health
care financing system that can lead to universal coverage. The
project will be led by Victor Fuchs and Ezekiel Emanuel.
May 19, 2006 - SCHOLARS TO STUDY THE IMPACT OF
ECONOMIC GLOBALIZATION
From July 11 August 10, 2006, the Center for
Advanced Study
in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) at Stanford will welcome 21
political scientists, sociologists, business and legal scholars, and
economistsall from different colleges and universities, including
several from Europe and Canadato a four-week intensive Summer
Institute titled Economy and Society: Trajectories of Capitalism.
