PAST DIRECTORS: O. MERIDITH WILSON (1966-1975)


O. Meredith Wilson
was president of the University of Oregon and the University of Minnesota before becoming director of the Center in 1966. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Brigham Young University in 1934 and a PhD in history from the University of California in 1943. His first academic appointment was at Brigham Young University in 1937. He also held faculty appointments at the universities of Utah and Chicago, and for a time was dean of University College at the University of Utah. He also served as secretary for the Fund for the Advancement of Education at the Ford Foundation before his appointment as president of the University of Oregon. In 1966 he became the second director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, a post he held until his retirement in 1975. Dr. Wilson also served as chairman of the board and federal reserve agent of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, 12th district, and chair of the American Council of Education. He was a director of the Northrop Corporation and a trustee of the University of Notre Dame and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. He was also a member of President Lyndon Johnson's Advisory Committee on Labor Management Policy, a member of the national committee on UNESCO, and a central figure in The American Council on Education, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Royaumont Foundation of Paris. He received many honors, including honorary degrees from 17 colleges and universities in the United States. Dr. Wilson died in November 1998 at the age of 89.
