PAST DIRECTORS: PHILIP CONVERSE (1989-1994)

 
Philip E. Converse was the fourth director, from 1989 to 1994. He is the former director of the Institute for Social Research and is also the Robert Cooley Angell Distinguished University Professor of Sociology and Political Science at the University of Michigan. He earned his BA degree at Denison University in 1949 and MA in English literature from the State University of Iowa in 1950. In 1954 Dr. Converse received the Certificat des Etudes Françaises from the University of Paris, and in 1956, an MA in sociology from the University of Michigan. He received his PhD in social psychology from the University of Michigan in 1958. Dr. Converse is an international authority on voting behavior and public opinion. His work includes The Human Meaning of Social Change and The Dynamics of Party Support: Cohort-Analyzing Party Identification
