About the Center’s Selection Process
The Center's selection process is presently in transition from its former nomination and panel ratings system to a new application system. A distinguished committee comprised of board members, former Fellows, and external members reviewed the Center's selection procedures and made recommendations for change that were subsequently approved by the Center's full board of trustees.
Beginning with the 2008-2009 academic year, CASBS began accepting applications for residential fellowships. The 2011-2012 residential program year will be the fourth year for this new application process.
While the Center completes the transition to its new application system, a vestige of the previous selection system is still in place for a limited number of scholars (see Eligible Nominees and Returning Fellows below).
Each application is evaluated by several external reviewers including experts in the applicant's field and typically one or more experts in related fields. The best-rated applications are then considered for fellowship awards by the Center's selection committee comprised of representatives from the board of directors and administrative staff as well as external members.
Although the process of composing cohorts is currently a hybrid of new and old procedures, by 2012-2013, all fellowships will be awarded under the new process. Final roster decisions (for all scholars requesting consideration) take into account all the important criteria for cohort composition (i.e. disciplinary balance, a good age distribution, institution balance, and demographics (race/ethnicity, gender, domestic/international, geographic location).
Eligible Nominees and Returning Fellows
While nominations are no longer accepted, anyone who was formally granted a six-year window of "Eligibility" (back in 2004-2005) that extends through 2011 can be considered under the previous selection system.
Returning Fellows can be considered through the old selection system as well, provided they bring their own stipends. Contact secretary at casbs.stanford.edu to request placement on a tentative roster.
NOTE: Having been nominated in the past does not automatically confer "Eligibility." Unless you were formally granted a six-year window of Eligibility that extends through 2011, you will need to request consideration through our new application process. The nomination form you may have completed is part of our records, but will not be accessible to you when completing our new online application form.
Under the current "hybrid" process, the remaining individuals with applicable eligible status may bypass the applications review process and request consideration for a fellowship class roster within the terms of their eligibility window. All scholars requesting consideration will be asked to submit a CV and statement of interests, as these are the materials the Fellow Selection Committee will use to make its final roster decisions in the fall. Those being considered under the old selection system do not need to have letters of recommendation submitted on their behalf.
