 The Nobel Prize

The most prestigious award given for contributions to the field of economics is the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel, commonly called the Nobel Prize in Economics. The first such prize in economics was given in 1969, and one has been awarded to each of 48 people. Not surprisingly, virtually all of the recipients of this award have been authorized by our board of trustees to receive Center fellowships. Eighteen of them have, in fact, been Fellows, and a number of others have asked to be listed on future rosters. In addition, several recipients of the Nobel Prize in Medicine & Physiology, Chemistry, and Peace have been Center Fellows.

Most recipients of the economics award were made eligible for a Center fellowship long before they received the prize, while they were quite young and in the early stages of their careers. We believe this record underscores the effectiveness of our selection procedures in identifying highly promising talent well before the larger world of scholarship acknowledges it in the form of major awards.
