List of materials to accompany individual applications
    1. Short Curriculum Vitae (CV or résumé)*
    2. Statement of interests*
    3. Two letters of recommendation (also due by June 2, 2008)
    * To ensure the integrity of your CV and Statement of Interests, we can only accept files in PDF format. Creating PDF files from other formats, such as Microsoft Word, is easy to do. If you need assistance, please see our help file on converting documents to PDF.

    Specific instructions:

    1. Short Curriculum Vitae
    (not to exceed four pages)
Shorten your CV to four pages (maximum) for purposes of emphasizing the most relevant information for the reviewers. Include your educational and professional experience and a representative list of your publications (may include forthcoming and works in progress; if there are foreign language titles, please provide English translation). Also list any significant community participation such as boards or key professional service. Other relevant information includes significant honors, awards and research grants (converted to U.S. dollars).

    2. Statement of interests
(not to exceed 3 double-spaced pages)
Provide a description of work you plan to do during your fellowship year, presented in the context of your broader research agenda. Note that this is to provide a sample of your plans rather than a proposal for work you must accomplish during the year; the Center experience often has a transformative effect on Fellows' work midstream. The applicant should address what is original about the proposed work, what is consequential to one's field and what, if any, potentials of relevance there are to contemporary social issues. While CASBS provides every Fellow a valuable opportunity to write and reflect, we ask you to consider how the Center's distinctive interdisciplinary context would enhance this work, and the obverse: how this work would engage a diverse, multidisciplinary class of Center colleagues. Your discussion should be directed not only toward specialists in your field but also should be accessible to reviewers in other fields. In your concluding paragraph summarize the present status of this particular research, what you hope to accomplish during your fellowship year, and list any research grants that have supported this work to date.

Note regarding citations: Due to the length restriction, do not include a bibliography with your statement of interests. A few key citations are fine, but not required (may be helpful for more obscure literature). One technique is to embed informal citations, e.g., (author, year) in the text. Use your good judgment regarding what to include and stay within the specified page limit.

    3. Two recommendation letters
On the application form, we ask for the name, institution and email address of two referees who are willing to write reference letters on your behalf. Both referees should be scholars who know you and your research, and are able to comment on your proposed work for the fellowship year and its significance, as well as your qualifications for carrying out this work at CASBS. They will be asked to comment on how the Center's intellectual community might influence the work and be influenced by your participation. If you know someone who has spent time at a multidisciplinary center like CASBS, that would be a good choice for one of the two referees.

When you first SAVE your application form – even if it is not yet complete – it will trigger an automated email to you that contains the instructions for soliciting reference letters from your referees. If you misplace this, there is an additional link on the application form to "Send/Resend Reference Instructions" to you. Finally, after you SUBMIT the completed application form, we will email you another reminder with these instructions. We ask you to forward that email – along with your statement of interests – to your referees. The email includes a special link (URL) for them to use to upload their recommendation letter directly to your application file (similar to the way you uploaded your short CV). It is your responsibility to send them the instructions and follow up to assure the two letters have been submitted online by the application deadline (June 2, 2008). Once a reference letter has been uploaded on your behalf, you will receive an automated email confirmation. You may also verify receipt dates here.

Because your application is not complete until your reference letters have been submitted, we strongly encourage you to complete your statement of interests and contact your referees at the earliest opportunity, well in advance of June 2nd. Referees are able to submit reference letters to your application file even before you have submitted the completed application form.

PREVIOUS APPLICANTS PLEASE NOTE: If you applied for a CASBS Fellowship in 2007 AND you indicate on your current application that you would like to reuse one or both of your reference letters from last year, then those letters DO count toward your reference letter requirement.  For example, if you elect to reuse both of last year's reference letters, then you do not have to submit any new ones.  If you choose to reuse only one of last year's reference letters, then you need to submit one new reference and notify that person as described above. If you have changed the topic or fellowship plans in your statement of interests, we strongly encourage you to solicit new reference letters. Letters prior to 2007 are not available for use.
